Goodyear Tire Review
Goodyear, founded in 1898 in Akron, Ohio, has become one of the world's leading tire manufacturers. According to Statista, Goodyear sold more than 155 million tires in 2019 alone, accounting for 11 percent of the US passenger tire market. Michelin, Bridgestone and Firestone lag behind single digit percentages.
Goodyear is still based in Akron but has grown significantly in recent years. The company manufactures passenger car tires, aircraft tires, commercial truck tires, racing tires and recreational vehicle tires. Goodyear also owns and operates several other tire brands such as Dunlop and Fulda.
Goodyear tires are known for their durable construction and materials. The company also backs its products with a lifetime tread life warranty. Select Goodyear tires, such as the Assurance TripleTred all-season tires, are guaranteed to last 80,000 miles.
Goodyear industry rankings
Like many passenger car tire brands, Goodyear tires must comply with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rating system. This system is called Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG), and it grades tires - with the exception of specialist tires - based on their tread wear, traction, and heat resistance.
Here is an explanation of the UTQG grading system:
Protector wear. This rating allows you to evaluate the durability of your tires. To calculate tread wear, tires are compared to a control tire that is rated 100. If a tire has a tread wear rating of 500, it means it has lasted five times longer than the control. According to SaferCar.gov, most passenger tires have tread wear between 300 and 500.
Clutch . This grade determines how well your tires hold up in the wet. Grip ratings are assigned on an AA, A, B, or C scale. Good everyday car tires usually get an A rating.
Temperature . This grade ranks a tire's heat resistance on an A, B, or C scale. Tires must withstand different temperatures depending on their specialty. For example, high-performance tires typically run at much faster speeds than an all-season tire and, in turn, have higher temperature ratings.
It is important to note that the NHTSA does not oversee the UTQG tests. Manufacturers and independent companies employed by brands are responsible for tire testing and reporting.
We have detailed several highly rated Goodyear tire models and their tread wear, grip and temperature performance using data from SaferCar.gov below.

For the popular 2017 Toyota Camry passenger car, the Goodyear Assurance MaxLife model will cost $136.99 per tire, which works out to nearly $550 for a complete set. All-season tires typically cost between $80 and $120 a piece, according to Consumer Reports.
Goodyear customer testimonials
Customer reviews are a good indicator of the overall quality of a tire brand. When it comes to Goodyear tyres, customer satisfaction is relatively high, with many reviews mentioning the high wear performance of the tread.
We have summarized some customer testimonials below to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of Goodyear tyres.
Positive impressions from Goodyear tires
“[Goodyear Assurance MaxLife] was on my 4-cylinder Chrysler 200 Limited Platinum when I bought it new in 2017. All in all, these are good tyres. They are 4/32 at 40,631, change regularly which is the best mileage I have ever used.” - via Tire Rack
“[I] drove 1,500 miles in mountains, in pouring rain, on dry hot roads and highways, and on long gravel roads and uneven grass fields with potholes. No signs of uneven or excessive wear [on Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar]. Good ride and little if any noise. - via Tire Rack
Bad experiences with Goodyear tires
"New tires [ Goodyear Integrity ] were good, but without winter tires to replace them with, they are not suitable for year-round operation in a four-season climate. They are easily confused by any slipperiness, be it slush, ice or melted snow.” - via Tire Rack
"[Goodyear Wrangler HP All-Weather ] came with the purchase of [my car]. So far, I am not happy to buy new tires with such little wear. To date, I have experienced spinning from heavy rain and wet roads.” - via Tire Rack
Our final thoughts on Goodyear tires
In our 2021 tire review, we gave Goodyear tires a 4.5 out of 5.0 star rating and selected the manufacturer as the most durable tire. Best Tire Recommendations
Goodyear is a great choice for many tire models, but it's worth considering other tire manufacturers for additional and, in some cases, more affordable options. Other well-known brands that scored highly in our 2021 tire review include Michelin and Cooper.
Michelin: the best tires overall
Michelin is one of Goodyear's biggest competitors, and for good reason. The tire manufacturer offers great tire options for all categories, including all-season, summer and all-terrain. Michelin models, like Goodyear tires, may have a higher price tag, but their high quality tires and design make them a worthwhile investment.

Cooper: Most Affordable
Drivers looking for an affordable tire manufacturer that doesn't compromise on quality should look to Cooper. A relatively new tire manufacturer, Cooper makes replacement models starting at $84 per tyre. The tire maker offers a long tread wear guarantee of up to 80,000 miles, putting it in the league of more mature industry players like Goodyear.
