Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has applied for a building permit to build on a 60-acre site at the Michigan Technical Resource Park (MITRP) on Ottawa Lake. This will be a closed test facility for the development of autonomous vehicle technology. If everything goes on schedule, it will open in October.<\/p>\n
The TRI facility will be located inside a 2.8 km long oval test track. It will include a congested urban environment, flat surfaces and a four-lane highway with high-speed entrance and exit ramps. The idea is to test scenarios of \u00abdangerous situations\u00bb that can occur on public roads.<\/p>\n
\u00abThis project will give us the opportunity to create an autonomous vehicle that is incapable of creating an accident,\u00bb explained Ryan Eustis, TRI's senior vice president of automated driving.<\/p>\n
MITRP has been a test site since 1968 and was sold in 2010 to a private developer. The 336-acre technology park is now available to automakers and suppliers for testing, design and technology development.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year in Las Vegas, TRI unveiled the result of its latest research, the 3.0 platform for autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n
