Half of its shares are owned by Volkswagen and the managing holding company Porsche SE. The shares of the latter, in turn, are owned by the Piech and Porsche families, the heirs of the company's founder.

As you know, Ferdinand Porsche worked as a design engineer for quite a long time. This was before he started developing a car for the Third Reich on the recommendation of Daimler. The car was released under the then new name of Volkswagen. You can read about these events in our publication on this period in the automotive history.

Porsche AG is not primarily associated with Ferdinand Porsche, but with his son Ferry Porsche. He took over the management and development of cars after his father's arrest in 1945. Ferry's son Ferdinand Alexander made a significant contribution to the development of the company. He designed the company's calling card and the flagship car Porsche 911.

Porsche 911, 1948.

Porsche is not just a brand of modern sportscars with a great racing history. These cars have a unique layout. This solution is not inherent in any other architecture and is a proprietary development. Since the 1990s, the Porsche AG range has been completely devoid of models with a front-mounted engine, which is typical for other brands.

Asset structure, restructuring and share swap with Volkswagen

The automobile company was founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931 as Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft or Porsche AG. It was engaged in the production of automobiles that did not fall within the scope of investors' interests. The main factory of Porsche was located in Stuttgart, the coat of arms of this city is present in the emblem of this brand.

Today, the company produces premium business and sports class cars. All offerings are characterized by high reliability and advanced technical solutions. Developments are carried out in cooperation with Volkswagen:

50.1 % shares are held by Porsche Automobil Holding SE, since December 2009;

49.9 % shares of steel are owned by Volksvagen AG.

Although the heirs of Ferdinand Piech own large blocks of shares, Porsche AG is a public company. Its shares are publicly traded.

Porsche SE came into being as a result of the restructuring of companies carried out in 2007. Wolfgang Porsche is considered to be its founder. The emergence of the company is connected with the need to consolidate Volkswagen shares in the hands of the Porsche family and return control over the main company. At the moment, Porsche SE shares are directly owned by members of the Porsche family and Piech, 13% belongs to the Austrian holding company Porsche, which is again controlled by Volkswagen AG. 10% of the Austrian holding company was sold by the Porsche family to the Qatari fund Quatar Holding LLC; the shares were bought back in 2013.

This complex cross-shareholding scheme allows Ferdinand Porsche's heirs to retain control over the largest public companies. It should be noted that Porsche SE is not a nominal company. It employs more than 12 thousand employees.

The Porsche and Piech families

Both families are two branches of Ferdinand Porsche's heirs and are involved in the development of the family business. The ancestor of this family of industrialists is considered to be Ferdinand Porsche, who was married to Eloise Joanna Caez. The couple had children Ferdinand (Ferry Porsche) and Louise, the girl married Anton Piech. The couple went on to have four children. One of them was Ferdinand Karl Piech, the longtime head of the concern until Herbert Diss. It was during Ferdinand Piech's tenure at Volkswagen that the company acquired a modern scale and became the owner of a number of premium brands that were included in the asset portfolio.

On the side of son Porsche, better known as Ferry, his marriage to Dorothea Reitz produced four children. Son Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was an automobile designer. His most famous creation was the Porsche 911, a car that was for a long time the flagship of the company's lineup and formed the recognizable style of the brand.

The first steps of the Porsche brand

By the time Ferdinand Porsche AG opened its own bureau, Ferdinand Porsche already had a lot of design experience; he had completed designs for the Auto Union racing car, which later became part of Audi, then the famous Volkswagen Käfer. In 1939, that is 8 years after the company was founded, the Porsche 64 went into serial production, and it borrowed many solutions from Volkswagen Käfer.

During World War II, the company actively cooperated with the Third Reich, participated in the design of heavy tanks «Tiger R» and super-heavy tank «Maus». In 1945 Ferdinand Porsche was arrested and spent 20 months in prison, because of his failing health he died soon after, it happened in 1951.

From this period, his son, Ferry Porsche, became involved in automobile development. With friends, he creates a prototype car with an aluminum body, which was being prepared for mass production. In 1948, the model was certified for use on public roads. The car traditionally used Volkswagen parts that came from the factory. These were motors, suspensions and gearboxes.

Interesting technical solutions of the new Porsche 356 model included a non-standard location of the engine on the rear axle, as a result of which it was possible to significantly reduce the price of the finished car. Also, the space in the cabin was freed, which allowed to place seats for several more passengers. The body, which was designed by Ferri engineers, Porsche was characterized by improved aerodynamics, practically not obstructing the air flows created during driving.

Restyled Porsche 356 Speedster, 1956.

Some time after the war, the company was able to return to Stuttgart again. Serial cars began to be made of steel, the Porsche plant was initially engaged in production of sports coupes and convertibles with fairly powerful engines (1100cc). Over time, the range of engines expanded, the cars began to be fitted with the predecessors of the automatic transmission, synchronized gearboxes. Other variants of cars - with roadster and hardtop bodies - also began to be sold.

Various technical innovations were offered and available to buyers. For example, engines with 4 camshafts per wheel, two ignition coils and other innovations.

New racing versions

Having restored production, the company thought about participation in racing. For this purpose, Porsche produced several racing roadsters, including the 550 Spyder, 718, which far exceeded the technical capabilities of Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.

At that time, Scuderia Ferrari was a very young and inexperienced team that produced racing cars. Failures in races and tragic events hardened Enzo Ferrari. Under his management, a unique design school was created. Nevertheless, his developments at that time were inferior to the engineering achievements of Porsche.

The legendary Porsche 911

The flagship Porsche 911 was designed by Ferry Porsche's son Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. This car was preceded by the Porsche 695 prototype (1950s), which had an excellent reputation among buyers, which was a very positive moment for a small family firm, not so long ago engaged in the production of cars. Nevertheless, other companies did not give the opportunity to enjoy the results of labor, so the produced cars became obsolete and lost demand rather quickly.

The 911 model, shown in Frankfurt in 1948, which was characterized by an opposition engine and rear-wheel drive, helped to support the demand of buyers. Recall that for a long time FIAT did not dare to produce rear-wheel drive cars. FIAT 124 was initially designed for rear-wheel drive, but this decision was abandoned due to the unreadiness of the market. Porsche 911 on the contrary was very popular. In addition, the demand for this car largely determined the positioning of the Porsche company and specialization in powerful sports coupes.

The Porsche 911 was originally called the 901, but was later called the 911 due to certification in the in-house documentation. It began production starting in 1963, currently also present in the range in the 7th generation.

Unique 911 configuration

At first, buyers were offered a two-door coupe and an open-top car. Because of its great success and recognizability, the 911 was assigned to a single model. Today it assumes a four-seat two-door sports coupe with an opposition engine on the rear axle. This design solution is very rare and is used only by this company, which is what distinguishes the 911 from all other cars on the sports car market.

Advanced technical features

For its time, the 911 had outstanding technical characteristics. It also had the image of one of the best racing cars. Porsche produced a total of many sporty versions for rally and circuit racing. In addition, the Porsche 911 was affordable and was used by many teams, winning the overall World Championship on numerous occasions, at the Targa Florio, 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Nürburging. Given that these races were exhausting not only for the drivers but also for the cars, such testing made the 911 a truly racing gem - powerful, reliable and safe.

The Porsche 911 Carrera, developed by the Porsche 911 Carrera, is particularly popular with modern buyers Wolfgang Dürheimer. The Carrera RS 2.7 and Carrera RSR modification appeared in early 1970. The name Carrera was chosen in memory of the race held in 1954 in Panamericana. It was after winning it that Porsche became popular in North America. The Targa modification had a glass roof, the restyled model of this car in the model range of the company appeared only in 1982.

Porsche Carrera GT

With all the success of the 911 among customers, the next car after it, the Porsche 914, became unprofitable. This modification was developed according to a new specification, which implied the production of an inexpensive sports model under the Volkswagen brand. The car came out as VW-Porsche-914. The reason for the failure was the unusual design, mixed name and unsuccessful marketing policy. Technical solutions were subsequently applied in the 914's successor modifications.

80s - technical improvement

Porsche AG was originally registered as a limited liability company. In the 1980s, the company went public and shares were freely traded on the stock exchange. This generally increased its liquid value and made it attractive to investors. The Porsche family, on the part of Ferry Porsche, lost control of Porsche AG. The company now holds a stake significantly larger than the Piechs' assets.

Ferdinand Alexander, the designer of the 911, stopped working for the company and opened Porsche Design, a design firm that produced accessories and bicycles. They complemented well a brand no longer associated by customers with family names.

It must be said that the Piëch family also followed the same path. In 2017, Piëch Automotive came into being, it was opened by Tony Piëch together with industrial designer Rhea Stark Rajic. This came after Ferdinand Piech left his position as head of VW with some unspoken conflict. The company is in the business of producing electric sports cars.

«Not-Porsche.»

The first non-Porsche executive was Ernst Fürmann. His first decision as head of the company was to replace the 911 sports car with a car with a classic architecture. It was a rear-wheel drive car with a front-mounted engine. Under Fürmann's leadership, the company developed another sports car, the Porsche 924, also with a traditional engine layout. It suspended, until the 1980s, production of the 911. However, in 1995, Porsche AG suspended production of all cars with a front-mounted engine and brought the 911 back into the lineup.

The next 924 was interesting, it was also being developed for Volkswagen, wanting to add an affordable sports car to the lineup. Due to the oil crisis, the car was not launched, but Porsche AG bought it from VW. It was distinguished from the 911 model by a classic layout with a front engine, positively perceived by consumers, good weight distribution of the body and elements, 4-cylinder water-cooled engine and modern design. Porsche 924 was in sufficient demand, in addition, the modification was distinguished by spectacular extended fenders, transferred from the racing version of the Porsche 924 Carrera GT. The cars were produced for a total of 6 years.

Fürmann's decision to abandon the development of the 911 was wrong, the new models sold inactively, despite being quite good technically. They were energy-absorbing bumpers, quite powerful engines, but due to lack of demand the modifications were simplified in 1976. During this period in VW begins to gradually work and gain professional weight Ferdinand Piech, The grandson of the founder and nephew of Ferry Porsche, after the hired managers for Porsche AG, this stage will be a new milestone.

A new stage under the control of Ferry Porsche

As a result of Ferry's failures, Porsche sent Fürmann into retirement. His place was taken by the American head of Porsche AG, Peter Schutz. One of the first things he did in his position was to bring the 911 flagship car back into the lineup. The range of cars was also updated. It was supplemented with technical solutions of the 924 version, favoring models with non-standard layout. The updated Porsche 911 had a large spoiler and quite powerful rear fenders. The company also released the Turbo model. It had a non-standard beveled body at the front and robotic headlights.

Porsche 959

The Porsche 959 was decided by Schutz to show its technical potential to the company. The decision was made when Porsche was invited to participate in a world rally, and the requirements were very liberal. As a result, the car had an advanced technical layout:

2.8 liter engine with twin turbochargers for 450 hp;

four-wheel drive drivetrain, with four shock absorbers per wheel;

computer-controlled torque steer that adapts ground clearance to driving conditions;

Many body parts were made of Kevlar, a plastic composite material with low weight and ultra-high strength.

The company participated in the Paris-Dakar marathon in 1986 in the proposed Group B and received 2 first places in the absolute standings. Subsequently, Group B was closed due to accidents. The races brought Porsche back to its former popularity, orders for cars were more than planned.

In general, the 959 project became unprofitable, but the technical solutions were used later. In this case, the company introduced racing technology into series production. The following were used:

transmission (simpler) used in the 964 series;

turbocharging system for the Turbo 964 version;

PASM adaptive suspension, invented for the 959, is now fitted in all modern Porsche cars.

Porsche 959

A modern reincarnation

In the 1990s, revolutionary changes awaited the company, which allowed it to become a modern Porsche brand. First of all, at this time the manufacturer abandoned the front-engine layout. Also stopped producing modifications of the classic 911 platform. New models began to come out more often, approximately every 4 years. As a result of revisions, engineers significantly improved the aerodynamics of all cars. Special attention was paid to the frame, dynamics and stability. Also, the developers replaced the torsion suspension. The management relied on special editions, which were sold in limited editions, but were very popular among rich buyers.

Nevertheless, the company failed to adapt to the economic crisis and incurred losses. Wendelin Wiedeking took over in 1993 and under his leadership the 993 model was created. It was a significant leap in the evolution of Porsche's sports architecture. It was she who created the usual modern look of cars of this brand. The modification had improved speed performance, but not finalized on safety, the cars were often involved in accidents. 1998 was a critical year for the company, besides, Ferry Porsche died at the age of 88, since 1989 he did not take part in the affairs of the company and lived on a farm in Austria.

Porsche 986 Boxster

The Porsche 986 Boxster roadster is the bearer of the company's new design and technical style.
