Genesis Extended Warranty Review

The Genesis Extended Warranty can provide extended coverage for up to 10 years from the date of your vehicle. This warranty extends the Genesis Limited Warranty on a new vehicle and must be purchased before the factory warranty expires. Genesis also offers two service plans, Pre-Paid Scheduled Maintenance Plus and Terms Protection Plus.

Genesis Extended Warranty Coverage terms
Vehicle service agreement 10 years / 120,000 miles
Prepaid scheduled maintenance plus up to 5 years / 75,000 miles
Terms Protection Plus up to 4 years / 60,000 miles

A Genesis vehicle service contract is a comprehensive plan that pays for the repair or replacement of most Genesis parts, such as:

  • Shocky
  • Fuel system
  • Brake system
  • Steering system
  • Electrical systems
  • Climate control system
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Navigation, audio and high-tech parts
  • Transmission (engine, transmission, drive axles)

In addition to covering your vehicle's major parts and systems, all Genesis extended warranties include the following benefits when your vehicle breaks down or needs covered repairs:

  • Towing
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Car rental reimbursement up to $35 per day for 10 days.
  • Trip interruption insurance up to $200 per day for 5 days

In addition, if you purchase a plan and eventually sell your vehicle to a separate buyer before coverage expires, the Genesis extended warranty can be transferred to the new owner.

Genesis Extended Warranty Exclusions and Exclusions

The Genesis Extended Warranty covers most vehicle parts except for the following parts and conditions:

  • Appearance elements such as trim and upholstery
  • Wear items such as brake pads, fuses and bulbs.
  • Damage caused by lack of maintenance or pre-existing condition
  • Accidents caused by collision, accidents, theft, weather, animals or vandalism.

Keep in mind that to use the Genesis Extended Warranty, you must bring your vehicle to a Hyundai or Genesis dealership for repair. In addition, you will need to service your vehicle according to the factory-recommended service schedule at your own expense to keep your coverage in effect. This is standard for extended warranties.

Do you need an extended warranty?

New Genesis vehicles are covered by one of the longest factory warranties in the industry, which means extended warranty protection may not be useful for several years. The Genesis warranty includes:

  • 5-year bumper-to-bumper warranty
  • 10-year powertrain warranty

Certified pre-owned (CPO) Genesis vehicles are covered by a six-year / 75,000-kilometer bumper-to-bumper warranty and whatever is left of the original 10-year powertrain warranty.

However, for older Genesis vehicles, an extended warranty may be worth it, as the likelihood of an electrical or mechanical problem increases as your car ages. If you plan on owning your car for a long time, a Genesis extended warranty may be a good idea.

There are two things to consider when deciding whether to purchase an extended warranty: the reliability of the vehicle and how long you plan to keep your vehicle. A particularly reliable vehicle, or one that you intend to sell before the manufacturer's warranty expires, will not necessarily benefit from the Genesis Extended Warranty.

To check the reliability of Genesis vehicles, we trust RepairPal, a site that compares the reliability of brands based on driver-reported data such as average annual repair costs and frequency of unexpected repairs.

Genesis is a relatively new luxury division of Hyundai Motor Company. Because RepairPal is so new, it has not yet collected enough data to assess reliability. However, it does provide a reliability score for parent company Hyundai, which may be a good indicator of Genesis' reliability.

Overall, Hyundai has a RepairPal reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 stars and ranks fourth out of 32 brands for reliability. Additional reliability scores are shown in the table below.

Hyundai Medium Industry average
Average annual repair cost 468 USD. USD $652
Average number of visits to the repair shop per year 0.3 visits per year 0.4 visits per year
Probability of major repairs * 10% 12%

* RepairPal defines a «serious» repair as any repair that costs more than three times the average annual repair cost for all models.

Hyundai is very well established in terms of reliability. Of course, Hyundai is not the same as Genesis. Before going to its own brand, Hyundai produced the Genesis model. According to RepairPal, the average annual cost to repair a Hyundai Genesis is $565 per year. This is slightly higher than the Hyundai average, but still lower than the average for all brands.

In the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Vehicle Reliability Study. SM Genesis ranked first among all 32 brands surveyed. Genesis vehicles showed the fewest number of problems per 100 vehicles at only 89, well below the industry average of 134.

With such high reliability ratings and a long manufacturer's warranty, it's unlikely that most drivers will need to purchase a Genesis extended warranty. However, if you plan to own your Genesis for a long time and want peace of mind, an extended warranty may be worth it at a reasonable price.

Genesis Extended Warranty Cost

Like most manufacturers, Genesis does not advertise prices on its website. This is probably because the cost of the Genesis Extended Warranty varies from vehicle to vehicle and depends on factors such as:

  • Your financing terms
  • The franchise you choose
  • Warranty period of your choice

The cost of the Genesis extended warranty is likely to be negotiated by the rep.

Benefits of an extended third party guarantee

If you are interested in an extended warranty, but the original factory warranty on your vehicle has expired, you will not be able to purchase a Genesis extended warranty from a dealer. However, you can purchase a vehicle service contract from a third-party provider at any time.

Even if your Genesis is still eligible for the manufacturer's extended warranty, a third-party plan may still be a better option. You'll have to compare costs and coverage options based on your individual offerings to be sure, but generally speaking, third-party vehicle service contracts have the following advantages over manufacturer extended warranties:

  • Often cheaper
  • May cover older vehicles
  • Offer longer terms of coverage
  • Suggest more coverage options
  • Can be purchased at any time
  • Accepted in a larger repair network
  • Offer several franchise and financing options
