Hyundai has started working on the next generation Hyundai i20, which is also expected to be the Hyundai i20 N. Today we can share with you thanks to our friend from Hyunjin Choi the first spy photos of the i20 N test mules.
A performance model chassis test mule was caught in a parking lot in South Korea. After years of rumors, thanks to this test mule, we're confident that the i20 will be the next N-type car and will likely be ready for release by early 2020. The original rumors alluded to the release of such a car in 2018, but the launch was pushed back down the priority list.
A first look inside reveals an N gear shift and a body reinforcement rack at the rear of the car. The Mule has a different wheelbase than the current model. We also see larger brakes with a red brake caliper, N wheels and dual exhausts for the Turbo engine.
The i20 N's engine changes and chassis modifications will mirror those of the i30 N, so expect significantly more firepower than the existing Supermini engines, and a suitably lowered and stiffened vehicle suspension, along with performance brakes and a more direct steering ratio.
The most likely engine candidate to boost performance to the desired level would be the widely used turbocharged 1.6-liter T-GDI engine. It offers 174 hp in the Tucson SUV, but a 200 hp figure will be necessary if Hyundai wants to successfully blend in with class strikers like the Fiesta ST and VW Polo GTI.
