Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) is receiving nearly $400 million from Hyundai to support new engine manufacturing. The funds will be used to build a plant dedicated to the production of engine heads, as well as to improve existing operations and support production of the new Sonata and Elantra.

HMMA, which opened in May 2005, is River Region's largest private producer. The staff is 2,700 and 500 part-time employees. With this latest investment, 50 new jobs are expected.

Up extension

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey joined HMMA for the announcement.
“Hyundai is an important member of Alabama's vibrant auto industry. This expansion at the Montgomery manufacturing facility will be the driving force behind global auto manufacturing for future growth in the US,” she said. "The new investment is a strong indication of the company's confidence in its operations in Alabama and in its highly skilled workforce."

“Through our latest expansion, HMMA continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to the people of Montgomery and the people of Alabama,” added Hyundai President and CEO Dong Ryeool Choi. We continue to monitor investments in new manufacturing technologies to ensure the long-term success of our Alabama assembly plant.”

Construction and power

The 260,000 square foot building will cost approximately $40 million to construct. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-November 2019.

“We are very honored that Hyundai has once again chosen to invest in HMMA,” said Judge Charles Price, 2018 Chairman of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. "Home to North America's only Hyundai manufacturing facility, the Montgomery community is committed to continuing our hugely successful 16-year partnership."

HMMA makes engines for the Sonata, Elantra and Santa Fe. The facility is capable of producing 700,000 engines a year to both support operations at HMMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia in West Point, Georgia.
