If you buy a Lincoln model in the Black Label trim line, it comes with a free four-year/50,000-mile service plan. You also get free car washes anytime as well as yearly vehicle maintenance. Of course, all of these perks are built into the higher price of a Black Label car, so they're not entirely free.

For the rest of the Lincoln range, the warranty provides for the replacement of certain parts during a "correction" period:

As another bonus (also shared by Ford), Lincoln's warranty covers damage caused by airborne materials (environmental emissions), even if there are no factory-related defects. Coverage is valid for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. So, if a flock of angry birds attacks your new Lincoln Aviator and damages its paint during this period, Lincoln will provide free paint damage repairs.

Lifetime roadside assistance

Like other car brands, Lincoln includes 24/7 roadside assistance with its new vehicle warranty. However, unlike other brands, Lincoln roadside assistance lasts as long as the original owner keeps the car . If you sell your Lincoln or buy a 2013 or newer Lincoln from a private owner, roadside assistance will be in effect for the remainder of the original six-year/70,000-kilometer drivetrain warranty period.

Lincoln Roadside Assistance includes the following benefits:

• Towing: your vehicle will be towed to your dealer, your preferred Lincoln dealer, within 100 miles of the breakdown, or the nearest Lincoln dealer. If you request to have your vehicle towed to a dealer more than 100 miles away, you will have to pay charges in excess of the 100 mile mark.
• Flat tire replacement . This includes replacing a flat tire if your Lincoln has a usable spare tire. (The service is not available if the vehicle has a tire inflation kit.)
• Start from an external power source: Lincoln will provide a 12V car battery with pulse start.
• Help with blocking. You are still responsible for a lost key fob, which can cost hundreds of dollars to replace.
• Fuel delivery. This service provides two gallons of gasoline, but is limited to two free cases over a 12-month period.
• Winch Removal Services . This includes pulling the vehicle less than 100 feet from a paved or county road, but not lifting.

What is not covered by the Lincoln warranty?

Lincoln's warranty does not cover damage caused by accidents, collisions, or impacts to the vehicle. If you're a Lincoln victim of theft, vandalism, riot, fire or explosion, that's the job of your insurance company.

You'll probably want your new Lincoln to look new, but keep in mind that any damage caused by driving through a car wash isn't covered by insurance. Also, if you enjoy polishing and waxing your own car, make sure the products you use are compatible with your Lincoln's paint. The warranty does not cover damage caused by something you applied to it or accidentally spilled on it. And yes, spilling baking soda or coffee on a car's paint can damage it.

Also be aware that the use of contaminated or unsuitable fuels or fluids can cause engine damage that is also not covered by the warranty.

Caution: SUVs are not army tanks

Now that Lincoln's lineup is made up mostly of SUVs, it's worth remembering that these aren't military vehicles. So, while you can sit high in your Lincoln Navigator, remember that moving through water at depth can cause damage. If the water is deep enough to be sucked into any of the transmission components, Lincoln's warranty will not cover the resulting damage. You also shouldn't be tempted to jump over curbs or overload your car because, again, any resulting damage won't be covered.

Lincoln Certified Used Car Program

Lincoln offers an excellent Certified Used Vehicle (CPO) program in which every vehicle goes through a 200-point inspection process. In addition to any repairs that may be required, the car will get a new oil change, new wiper blades and other benefits.

The Lincoln CPO Guarantee is in line with the brand's positioning in luxury. You get a six-year full warranty on 1,000 components.

This warranty period is, of course, from original date of use , but it can be quite large, depending on the Lincoln CPO you purchased. For example, we found a two-year-old Lincoln MKZ sedan with 17,800 km on it. This means the CPO's full warranty covers it for another four years, or just over 82,000 miles.

Under the Lincoln CPO warranty, a $100 deductible applies to covered repairs and repairs must be performed at Lincoln dealerships in the United States and Canada.

The Lincoln CPO program provides 24/7 roadside assistance, which also includes the following benefits:

• Car rental compensation A: Up to $45 per day for up to five days.
• Assistance with expenses by destination A: Up to $75 for emergency transportation to your destination.

Lincoln Protect Extended Service Plans

Lincoln Protect Extended Service Plans are Lincoln Extended Warranties, similar to warranties on Ford vehicles. There are four plan options, each available for up to eight years or 150,000 miles (from the start date of the new vehicle).

Lincoln ESP choices include:

• PowertrainCARE: Covers engine, transmission and transmission including all wheel drive transfer cases, drive axles and CV clutches.
• BaseCARE: adds a steering system, brakes, front suspension, climate control system and various electrical components.
